If we take a look
at these two animals, we can see that both of them are symmetrical, but in a
different way. The butterfly has a bilateral symmetry, that means that if we
divide it into two halves, both are equal. Whereas in the starfish we can see that
there is a different symmetry, a radial one, that means that if we divided the
starfish from its centre we can observe that it can be divided into five equal
parts.
The second
symmetry can be a bit more difficult to see, but it is a challenge that
students would like because it is very interesting to see and differentiate them.
Moreover, they can try to work with different radial symmetries, not only with
five radiuses, also with three, four, or more than five. To achieve that they
would have to fold a paper the number of times according to the number of
radiuses they want.
Moreover, it helps children to work with a spatial
dimension that sometimes can be difficult for them, and this is a good way to
do it.
